The National Day of Prayer event for Waxahachie is scheduled from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, on the Ellis County Courthouse steps.

“The theme for this year’s event is, ‘Prayer, America’s Strength and Shield,’ based on Psalm 28:7, which says, ‘The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped,’ ” said Judy Nelson, secretary of Farley Street Baptist Church.

The Rev. Leon Clift, pastor of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship of Stephenville, will host the event and present several vocal selections.

Guest speakers who will pray are Ellis County and District Attorney Joe Grubbs, First Baptist Church of Waxahachie; the Rev. James Earl Williams, Miracle Revival Center of Waxahachie; Chuck Smith, First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie; Pat Fuller, director of women’s ministry, Farley Street Baptist Church; the Rev. Joel Harris, Farley Street Baptist Church; the Rev. David Gradberg, pastor of First Baptist Church of Palmer; and the Rev. Richard Smith, pastor of Farley Street Baptist Church.

“This prayer event will be the greatest event of 2008 as we gather to pray over America, our government, leadership, businesses and families,” Nelson said, encouraging people to bring their lawn chairs.

In case of rain, the service will be moved to First Baptist Church.
