TYLER, Texas – Progressive Grocer magazine has selected Brookshire Grocery Company as its 2011 Outstanding Independent Regional Retailer of the Year.

Meg Major, editor in chief of Progressive Grocer magazine, presented the award to Mike Terry, Brookshire’s executive vice president of retail operations, at the National Grocers Association annual convention Monday, Feb. 14, in Las Vegas, Nev.

The magazine annually recognizes excellence from among the ranks of innovative and successful privately held independent retailers and selects winners based on a number of key criteria, including overall industry leadership, longstanding contributions to the industry, corporate culture, community leadership, executive stewardship, business evolution and achievements with social responsibility and sustainability according to a press release.

“In a business where people are often trumpeted as being its greatest asset, there is but a handful of distinct leaders that stand ahead of the pack and personify that mantra in word and deed,” Major said in the magazine’s February issue. “Without question, Progressive Grocer’s 2011 Outstanding Independent Regional Retailer, Tyler, Texas-based Brookshire Grocery Co., is one of them.”

Developed about seven years ago as a way to recognize overall excellence among the nation’s leading grocery organizations, PG’s Outstanding Independents awards have grown in prominence over the years, a spokesman said. In response, BGC President and Chief Executive Officer Rick Rayford credited the company’s 12,000 employee/partners who serve in stores and non-retail operations across Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

“Providing food to people is indeed a high calling and we are very fortunate to have the quality of people working within this incredible industry who care so deeply about safely providing food to customers,” Rayford said in a press release. “Taking care of customers better than anybody else is central to our mission of providing a great food and shopping experience.”
