BentleyGlass was at one time one of the most famous scientists in the nation. His life was a journey that began with missionary parents and a Texas education. Glass traveled the world, wrote volumes of books, made important scientific discoveries, and in the 1950s and 1960s, helped the entire nation start thinking about science and the ethics of the latest discoveries.

Texas’ War on free speech

In May, a federal appeals court upheld a Texas law that prohibits social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube from discriminating against users based on their ideas. In prohibiting such actions, Texas has declared war on free speech.

Are we afraid to follow too closely?

I pray a lot, it’s what a pastor does. I keep a prayer list and I have columns on my list. I pray for those who are sick physically, sick spiritually, I intercede for my enemies (that list seems to grow all the time), I pray for our president and other leaders around the world. I ask God for help in a variety of other things, I tell Him I’m sorry for my failures, I remind Him He is awesome and I let Him know I am grateful for all that He does.

The lost conversation

Eight days of rafting down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with my daughter promised to be an exceptional experience. Introducing myself to a fellow voyager, a Texan, I joked that surely Texas wasn’t really planning to secede, because it would be a pain to have to obtain a visa to visit Austin. This didn’t seem to go over very well. Perhaps I had overreached. I retreated for the rest of the trip into an affable neutrality.
