FERRIS — As the day dawns on each school this fall, every teams has hopes and dreams to be the last one standing on the star at AT&T Stadium in December. The Ferris Yellowjackets share in the same outlook and they hope that the 5 year run of playoff appearances’ will continue and take them farther than they have gone before.
AVALON — Following a rebuilding year that still saw the Avalon Eagles make the playoffs in 2021, the Eagles head into the new season with lots of optimism. Head coach Malcolm Cole, entering his eighth season at Avalon, is impressed with the growth and maturity of his team’s underclassmen and has a solid core of returning starters with good speed.

I’ve taken a cue from the wild animals this week and moved early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Wild things have the innate ability to know how to make the best of the seasons and this time of year, they seldom venture forth during the heat of the day. The same with this old outdoors writer but I did get out on the water a couple times and caught a nice mess of fish both times. I also learned or “relearned” a few basics of summer fishing.
