Oyster reefs benefit humans and the environment through a suite of ecosystem services. A single oyster can filter up to 240 liters of water a day, resulting in increased water quality and clarity while supporting a unique and highly diverse community of fish and invertebrate marine species. In Europe, native oysters once formed extensive beds and reefs in the North Sea, English Channel, and coastal areas from Ireland, areas of Scandinavia and the Baltic, and through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. However, over 90% of former oyster reefs have been lost.

Council denies request for electronic church sign

A Waxahachie church Monday was denied a specific use permit (SUP) for an electronic sign in front of its building after it failed to get enough votes from the City Council. The council voted 3-2 to approve the SUP requested by First United Methodist Church Waxahachie, but since more than 20 percent of the residents who live within 200 feet of the church (41 percent) opposed the permit a super-majority vote (four out of five votes) was required, per the city ordinance.

MPD: Railport fatality a stowaway case

Midlothian police now believe the May 27 death of an individual whose body was found on Railport Parkway was a case of a stowaway who fell from a semi-truck after a non-stop ride of almost 500 miles. The Midlothian Police Department said Friday that a 51-year-old man had apparently hopped a ride on a semi-truck in Edinburg, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border, and had stayed on the truck until meeting his unfortunate end near the truck’s destination.
