The Best of Ellis County awards program has been going strong for more than a decade now, and not even a pandemic can stop it from becoming bigger than ever.

The Waxahachie Media Group, which includes the Daily Light and Midlothian Mirror, will begin online balloting for the 2020 Best of Ellis County on Sunday, Aug. 2. The Best of Ellis County program each year recognizes the most outstanding businesses and services in the county as chosen by voters.

The Best of Ellis County recognition program affords the surrounding community and our avid readers to nominate and later vote on their favorite businesses and people. There will be a total of 173 subcategories under a total of 11 group categories: Beauty and Health; Dining; Entertainment; Real Estate and Finance; Home Services; Kids and Education; People and Places; Services; Shopping; Top Employers; and Vehicle Dealers and Services.

The 2020 Best of Ellis County magazine and website will list the top three and first-place winners for these categories, as chosen by residents of Ellis County. This will allow consumers, both local and visiting, to make informed decisions about where to go for various goods and services across the county.

The individual categories range from Best Breakfast to Best Automotive Service or even Best Happy Hour and much more. The categories will be published periodically in the Daily Light and Mirror throughout the nominating and voting period.

Colten Crist, director of operations and advertising for the Waxahachie Media Group, will oversee the Best of Ellis County program for the second time in 2020 and is excited to see the event grow.

"When I see businesses celebrating being chosen and honored by Best of Ellis County, I get goosebumps," Crist said. "The Best of Ellis County recognition, in my opinion, is the most prestigious honor bestowed to a business in Ellis County. It is the purest form of word-of-mouth recommendations, locals recommending locals, that continues to allow a voice to our neighbors to say who they think the very best truly is. We are honored to be the conduit for our community voices which allows our favorite businesses to be celebrated."

The nomination process will be conducted online only this year, with each category open to write-in votes. The initial round begins Aug. 2 and concludes Aug. 16. Once again, the three businesses with the most nominations in each category will move on to the second and final round of voting.

The final round of voting will be multiple choice and will allow readers to choose the first place from the top three nominees in each category. This final round will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 11.

The winners in each category will be announced at a time to be determined.
