Waxahachie High School used a no-hitter by senior pitcher Courtney Gonzales to beat Lancaster High School on Tuesday at Lady Indian Field, run-ruling the Lady Tigers 16-0 in three innings and securing its seventh district win.

“Courtney had a great game,” said Joe Wakeland, the Lady Indians varsity assistant softball coach. “Anytime you throw a no-hitter, hit a home run and have six RBIs, it’s a pretty good night. When you see one strike every seven pitches, it’s hard to get anything going at the plate. We managed to hit the ball pretty well, though.”

Gonzales struck out three in three innings pitched and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a single, a home run and a triple, earning her six RBI’s in the process.

Despite the lack of strikes, the Lady Indians recorded 15 hits, with four of those going for extra bases.

WHS senior Kendall Behning and junior Kristen Ortiz added to Gonzales’ blast with a pair of inside-the-park home runs. Eight out of 11 Lady Indians who played Tuesday night contributed to the offensive effort with at least one hit.

“I’m so proud of our girls for coming together as a team,” Gonzales said about the team’s rebound after the 8-6 loss to Mansfield Timberview High School on Friday. “We showed that tonight, by working together as one, we can beat the teams we’re supposed to and surprise the ones we’re not.”

Along with a no-hitter, the Lady Indians played solid defensively, committing no errors and allowing only one runner on base.

Sharrika Livingston, a sophomore and one of the Lady Indians’ most feared batters, was a threat from the plate to the Tigers during Tuesday’s contest. Her batting average of .333, on base percentage of .667 and one stolen base were key to not only building an early lead but securing the win.

“Tonight we did a great job being aggressive and cutting out errors,” Livingston said, noting their district record’s improvement to 7-5. “It was a step up from our last game. Against Lancaster, we took advantage of opportunities and executed at the plate.”

The Lady Indians, who are scheduled to face off next against the Arlington Seguin Cougars at 7 p.m. on Friday at Arlington Seguin Softball Field, will look to take sole control of fourth place in district 14-5A standings with a win against the Lady Cougars and a loss by Mansfield Lake Ridge High School.
