WASHINGTON, D.C. — After voting for Paul Ryan to serve as the 54th Speaker of the House, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) released the following statement:
“After a turbulent and somewhat chaotic few weeks, the House has elected Paul Ryan to serve as Speaker of the House. The Speaker has a special responsibility to this institution and to all Americans. The House of Representatives is known as the people’s house and sets about each day to conduct the people’s work. Not only must the Speaker serve his or her party, they must also preside over the entire House. To serve in this post, I have full confidence in Paul Ryan.
“Two individuals were nominated on the House Floor today to serve as Speaker, Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan. I voted for Paul Ryan. He is a truly decent man. Paul Ryan will be the 8th Speaker I have worked with in the House. As with all of the last seven Speakers, I will agree with him on some things and disagree on others.  However, we both share a love for America and a heartfelt desire to make the future better for our country.”
