The Education Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of educational opportunities in the Waxahachie Independent School District.

Candace Ahlfinger, WISD comunications director, visited the Rotary Club to explain the organization and present information on the Legacy Run fundraiser.

The foundation was founded in 1999 and is guided by a group of twenty local board members who volunteer their time. They meet their mission by presenting grants to WISD teachers twice a year.

The teachers use the money for projects to enhance the quality of the school experience for their students. They also give scholarships for Dual Credit classes. Since its inception in 1999 the foundation has given $200,000 in grants and scholarships according to Ms. Ahlfinger.

Grants are for up to $5,000. Some of the types of grants have been for calculators, technology, the LEGO project and even for chickens. The chickens show students the full life cycle and show how life begins and where eggs come from. They come from chickens on a farm. Who knew? Not the city kids before the grant.

Foundation treasurer Judd McCutchen presented information on the foundationís upcoming fund raiser, the Legacy Run. This is a fun family event including 5K, 10K and a one mile fun run/walk. There will also be a bounce house, food and music for all to enjoy. The foundation is seeking sponsors for the event which will be held Saturday, October 10 at 8:00 am at Stuart B. Lumpkin Stadium.
