It’s Pepper Power Day at the market this Saturday. That means there will be lots of spicy sampling for all the chile lovers out there. Farmers Market Chef Cheryl and some helpers will be on hand with samples of a roasted pepper and tomato salsa. Recipes and helpful tips on growing and using peppers will also be available. As always, you can find Cheryl next to the Ellis County Master Gardeners at the back of the market shed. Of course, Billy and Jim will be calling everyone over to sample their mild to fiery hot salsas. Their salsas include jalapeño, habanero and ghost peppers along with a variety of fruits. Shirley, at Jams Jellies and More has jars of pickled jalapeños along with other preserves. Betha’s Best also carries a variety of salsas and pickles. Be sure to stop by the weGarden’s booth and sample some pepper jellies. They have green jalapeño jelly, jalapeño-apricot jam, and habanero-mint jam ready for sampling. You will also find breads, cakes and muffins to hold those sweet treats.
Look for lots of beautiful summer produce this week. You will find locally grown tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, green beans, onions, peppers, peaches, eggs and more. We have Texas-grown melons and berries, along with potatoes and black eyed peas ready to drop into the pot with a ham bone.
Gary still has a nice selection of potted plants and herbs. Our crafty ladies have handmade jewelry, oils and beauty products for your enjoyment. You see, there is more to the farmers market than produce.
Be sure to sample the delicious, homemade tamales or stop by Tommy’s and purchase a breakfast burrito, hamburger or hotdog. At the Master Gardener booth, you will find more than gardening information. Stop by and sample some ice cucumber and mint water to sip while shopping.
