It came down to one run in both games, and both times St. Gregory’s University (SGU) came out on the winning end (3-2 and 4-3) over the SAGU Lions on Friday. The Cavaliers topped the Lions. SGU improved to 10-28 overall and 5-12 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC). SAGU is now 10-32-1 overall and 1-18 in the SAC.
St. Greg’s started off the game with a bang when SGU’s Nick Hoffman hit a homerun over the left field fence on a 2-2 count. In the second inning SGU scored when Jesse Foster singled through a hole at short stop, scoring Adrian Soltero.
In the top of the fourth inning, Brock Schneider reached base on a walk. Bryant Threadgill started off a three-hit rally followed by Eric Hagstrom and Preston Hornbeck. Hornbeck singled to short, scoring Schneider and making the score 2-1.
SAGU was able to tie the game up, 2-2, in the top of the sixth. Threadgill singled to right field. Montalvo came in to pinch run for Threagill. Justin Harvey bunted and popped out to the pitcher and Hornbeck flied out to center, making two outs. Griffin Glenn singled up the middle, getting Montalvo to third. Montalvo scored on SGU’s bobble.
Unfortunately, SGU was quick to answer scoring one run of their own in the sixth. David Montano made it to base after being hit by a pitch. Soltero, who was pinch running for Montano, stole second base. SGU’s Logan Hart singled to right field, scoring the winning run by Soltero.
SAGU’s Tucker Burt pitched five and one-third innings, giving up five hits, three runs and sitting down three. Kiefer Ballard came in relief, pitching the final two-third innings. Bryant Threadgill went two for three at the plate.
In the second game SGU scored two runs right off the top. SAGU was able to score one run in the top of the third. Anthony Montalvo singled to left field. Josh Terry singled to center, advancing Montalvo to the third. Schneider doubled to right, scoring Montalvo.
In the seventh the Lions came up with two runs. Griffin Glenn singled to left. Collin Gifford came into pinch run for Glenn. David Ancira hit a sacrifice bunt that got Glenn to second. Gifford advanced to third after Dej Mathis flied out to right. Josh Terry singled to right, scoring Gifford. Terry was able to score after Schneider singled up the middle. The Lions went up 3-2.
The Cavaliers tied up the score 3-3 in the seventh after getting one run off of two hits without a SAGU error.
In the eight, SGU got three quick outs. The Lions were unable to get anyone on base.
SGU got a walk-off win when Adrian Soltero scored on a bases loaded error in the bottom of the eighth.
Hayden Killebrew pitched for the Lions. Killebrew struck out four. Josh Terry led SAGU offensively, going two-for-three with one run and one RBI.
Next, SAGU will take on Oklahoma City University on Friday at 1 p.m.
