Waxahachie’s swim team competed in the District 12-5A swim meet, where both the girls and boys team took home second place finishes.

Waxahachie competed against six other swim teams including Sunnyvale, Mesquite, Poteet, Forney, North Forney, Rockwall Heath and Red Oak High School.

“They did very well. They went in knowing it would be very tough, because Rockwall Heath was new to our district,” she said. “instead of going up to 6A they stayed in Class 5A.”

All of the Waxahachie relays placed second expect for one, which took home the bronze in third place, Pruitt said.

“My girls team placed second and I only have eight girls on the team,” she said. “My girls team was very small, so they had to place pretty high in order to get their points.”

The team has been doing well all season long, Pruitt said.

“They’ve been doing pretty good,” she said. “We got second place in a Midway meet a few weeks ago and got a couple of trophies there.”

The Regionals swimming meet that the team works for each year is right around the corner, Pruitt said.

“A lot of my kids will get to go on and swim at the next level, which will be in Frisco in two weeks on Feb. 6 and 7,” she said. “On the sixth are the prelims and if you’re in the top 16 then you get to come back and swim in the finals. All of our relays should qualify for the finals.”

The Waxahachie swim team has six relay teams, three boys and three girls.

Levi David is the only WHS swimmer that placed first at the district meet.

“He was seeded second or third actually,” Pruitt said. “So it wasn’t expected, because Rockwall Heath had two boys that were expected to beat him, and he ended up swimming his best time at 22.91 (seconds).”

David is a sophomore and has a lot of potential ahead of him, Pruitt said.

“He also placed third in his 100 (yard) free and then anchored both of our boys 200 and 400 free relays.”

Another swimmer, Emily Rutan set a new personal best time of 27.37 seconds in the girls 50 yard freestyle.

Captain Trent Pope also set a new personal best with a time of 1:02 in the boys 100 yard breaststroke.
