Red Oak High School Winter Guard competed against 15 other high schools in the area at the Winter Guard contest Jan. 17 at Colleyville Heritage High School. Red Oak came away with a big win securing first place by almost 20 points.
Winter guard is the equivalent of indoor color guard. It uses a combination of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. Winter guard is called the “Sport of the Arts,” because it brings music to life through performance in competitive format.
“Hours before scores had been announced Red Oak students took the opportunity to go around and congratulate the other competitors at the contest, gracefully telling them how much they enjoyed watching their performances throughout the day,” winter guard coach Chris Kichline said. “As a coach, this was not something I would have expected, but this act of selflessness and sportsmanship is something our schools, parents, and community can all be proud of.”
