The Indians men’s junior varsity team fell to the Cleburne Yellowjackets, 72-81, when the two teams faced off Friday night in the Dr. Dave Williams Tournament.
The Indians had a six point lead (23-17) with 7:08 to play in the second period, before the Yellowjacks added two points from the paint and another two from free throws to cut into the Indians lead.
The Indians again pushed out to a six-point lead after Noah Baker (No. 11) made one of his two free throws with 5:03 remaining in the half (26-20).
The Yellowjackets responded by driving down the lane for a two-point shot, but the Indians quickly answered back when Coda Duarte (No. 20) drained a long three pointer over his defender to keep Waxahachie in front 29-25.
Cleburne made it a two-point game (29-27) after they sank both of their free throws on the following possession.
The Yellowjackets came back again to tie the game at 29, before they eventually took the 31-29 lead from making both free throw shots.
Duarte came back big and sank his second three-point shot to put Waxahachie back on top 32-31.
The Indians were in foul trouble and Cleburne took advantage by tying the game at 32 off another free throw.
The Yellowjacks again jumped out to a two-point lead (32-34) before Duarte nailed his third three-point shot to put the Indians back in front by one point, 35-34.
Cleburne regained the one point lead off of a lay up, but that didn’t last long because Waxahachie’s Kenneth Allen (No. 4) got an offensive rebound and put up two-points for the Indians.
Cleburne decided they had enough of the back-and-forth scoring and went on an offensive scoring drive that went into and back out of the half. The offensive drive was kickstarted by the Yellowjackets sinking a three-point shot that gave them a two-point, 37-39 led going into the locker room.
Late in the third Cleburn sank another three pointer and build their lead to five points 52-47.
Waxahachie fought back to make it a one-point game when Baker nailed both of his free throws. Then Kalyn Delce (No. 33)tied the game at 52 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.
Cleburne eventually jumped out to a huge lead by the middle of the fourth quarter, leaving Waxahachie in the dust (60-66).
Trevon Smith (No. 3) brought the team within three points off a steal and When things were all said and done the Yellowjackets too the nine-point win 72-81.
Head coach of the JV men’s team Mark Williams said that the team just wasn’t one point during the game.
“We just unraveled a little bit,” Williams said. “We missed a bunch of chip shots around the basket, missed some free throws down the stretch, had too many turnovers and just didn’t play like ourselves.”
