The Waxhahachie Lady Indians are right in the middle of the Ennis Lady Lions Basketball Tournament. They started out with a 46-29 win against the Tomball Lady Cougars.
Waxahachie led Tomball 27-11 with 1:27 left in the first half of the game. The Lady Cougars then drove down the court to sink a three-point shot, but freshman guard Destini Washington (No. 2) added two more before the half and Waxahachie jumped to a 16-point lead at the half, 30-14.
The Lady Indians looked to be shooting, rebounding and ball handling the ball better than they had in their other games.
Tomball added two more points to cut the Waxahachie lead down to 14 points, but then the Lady Cougars made the mistake of sending Waxahachie’s junior guard Desrinee Pointer (No. 5) to the free throw line because she sank both her first and second basket.
The Lady Cougars responded by driving down the court and nailing a three point shot to being the score to 32-19.
Freshman post Ariana Tunson (No. 31) brought the Lady Indians to 34 points after she also made both her free throws.
Pointer would go out of the game after she upset her ankle, but would return later.
Tomball kept getting closer to matching Waxahachie’s score after they hit a lay up and added two points, 34-21.
With 32.5 seconds left in the third quarter, senior guard Natesa Conner (No. 10) found Tunson on a pass to a lay up and the Indians built their lead to 36-21.
Waxahachie was winning the rebound battle but couldn’t seem to hang onto the ball offensively and kept turning it over.
The Lady Cougars got a steal and followed it up with an easy layup for two more points, which cut the Lady Indians lead to 13 points.
At the end of the third quarter the score favored Waxahachie 36-23.
Tomball pulled within 10 points of coming back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter when Pointer went back to the bench after upsetting her earlier leg injury.
Pointer came back in though and drove to the basket for two points. This put Waxahachie in front by 12 points, 39-27, with 4:50 left in the game.
Pointer help keep the Lady Indians on top by making both of her foul shots and not allowing Tomball to come back and win.
The Lady Cougars did add two more points off a shot from the paint with 2:21 left to play.
Again Pointer found herself at the free throw line, where she made both her shots with 57.3 seconds left on the clock.
Tomball continued to foul the Lady Indians in desperation of getting the ball back in the finally minute of the game, but Waxahachie held onto the lead and won the first game of the Ennis Lady Lions Basketball Tournament, 46-29.
Head coach Lesli Priebe was proud of the way her team played to start the tournament.
“We had to play great defense and we did that in the first half” Priebe said. “Once again I thought our bench did a really good job. I thought that Destinee did a good job of running the point guard while Diamond was out. We did a good job of getting rotation.”
Priebe said the game was tougher than what she final score showed.
“It was definitely a tough game,” Priebe said. “We talked about at half time, handling the pressure and not turning the ball over.”
The Lady Indians made 17 out of their 24 free throws.
