Nothing compares to playing and running in the mud as a child, except when a person can play in the mud as an adult.

The Maypearl Chamber of Commerce and Maypearl Education Foundation will host its second Filthy Five K mud run at 9 a.m. on May 10 at the Lakeview Camp and Conference Center.

The newest part of this year’s run is the number of people participating, said Ca-Ce Brewster, the event coordinator. About 180 people participated last year. This year, about 226 had signed up as of Tuesday, Brewster said. The organizations are hoping more than 300 participants will sign up. The organizations are hoping to raise about $9,000-$10,000. Last year, they raised about $7,500.

“Most of our responses for last year were how organized the event was,” she said. “That's a big deal, because that can make or break an event."

With military-style obstacles, runners will compete for who can get through the course the quickest, said Mary Sword, Maypearl’s Education Foundation president.

Runners will climb rope ladders 16-feet high, go over hay bales at least 20-feet high and carry sand bags through the course. Oh, and they’ll have to dodge muddy holes filled with water as well as tackle other obstacles, Sword said.

“Last year's event, when people came across the finish line, there was the mud slide that went off the back of the dam at Lakeview Camp," Sword said.

That will be the same this year, and like last year as well, dish soap will be added to give the slide a little more slip.

“That’s probably the biggest part, the funnest one,” Brewster said.

At the end of the event, a shower station will be available for guests to clean off. Those who don’t want to compete in the timed race don’t have to, and can take it at their own pace.

The Lakeview Camp and Conference Center is located at 5128 Farm-to-Market Road 66 in Waxahachie. To register, visit or register on-site the day of the event. The cost is $55. All participants will get a finisher medal, a lunch ticket and a T-shirt as well as access the race. For more information, visit the Filthy Five K Facebook page for updates at
