The Silver Ring Thing, a unique para-church youth ministry that promotes the message of purity and abstinence, in partnership with FirstLook Medical Center in Waxahachie will be making a two-hour presentation at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Executive Director of FirstLook Donna Young said for the past 18 years they have been supporting women who have experienced unwanted pregnancies in the county. She said this year they realized they needed to expand and reach out to youth.

“It’s important that we get the abstinence message out,” Young said. “Once we provide the information, I believe the young people in our community will be very capable of making a decision to abstain. We just need to get the message out there.”

Young added that one way to clearly communicate the abstinence message would be through the Silver Ring Thing event.

Senior Vice President and National Director for SRT Jason Burtt said bringing the event to this area was an opportunity the organization just couldn’t pass up. He said they are a responsive organization and after meeting Young and Graham Hicks of FirstLook at a conference in Dallas, he knew the need was great for this program in the community, as it is nationally.

“When you look at the area of sexuality, it effects every other area of a young person’s life,” Burtt said. “This event covers those effects and the advantages of waiting.”

At the end of the event, students have the opportunity to purchase a silver ring that signifies they’ve made the commitment to wait.
