Tonight is going to be a big night for the Waxahachie soccer program.

Both the boys and girls varsity teams have a shot at winning the district title for the first time in the same season. The boys have never won a district title before.

The Indians must win tonight against Red Oak to guarantee the district title. Waxahachie can also clinch with a tie if Ennis ties or loses to Corsicana. Ennis was the preseason favorite to win the district and is currently sitting in second place, but just a point behind Waxahachie.

The Indians have clinched at least second place as Red Oak canít catch Waxahachie. A Red Oak win coupled with an Ennis loss would let the Hawks take second place and drop Ennis to third with the Indians winning.

Ennis is taking on Corsicana, who needs to win to even have an outside shot at making the playoffs. The Tigers† are tied with Ferris for the No. 4 spot in district, which is the final playoff spot. But the Yellowjackets are likely going to beat Lancaster, who is winless and has just two goals in district play. Even if Corsicana wins, they likely will lose out on the final playoff spot against Ferris due to goal differential.

The last time Waxahachie met Red Oak, the Indians staved off a ridiculous amount of scoring chances by the Hawks and held on to get the 1-0 win.

Red Oak rattled off 12 shots, but only four were on goal because four others hit posts and three others were within a foot of the goal. The Hawks even had a goal waved off due to a late offsides call.

The gameís lone goal came on one of Waxahachieís two corner kicks the whole game. Ivan Anaya sent a corner kick into the box and Matthew Berning tried to bury the shot. His kick was deflected, but it rolled through the defense and right to the foot of Dylan Mclain. He knew what to do with it as he sent a low blast through the huddled mass in front of the goal and just out of the reach of the diving Red Oak keeper less than five minutes into the second half.

Look for this to be an epic between two teams that really donít care for each other. Waxahachie (11-5-4, 6-1-2 in 28-4A) hosts Red Oak (5-3-1 in 28-4A) at 7:30 p.m.

Before that game, the Lady Indians and Lady Hawks will be playing for the district title. The two teams were the preseason picks to win district and fittingly, it will come down to the final game.

Red Oak beat Waxahachie 3-2 in the teamís first meeting and both of the Lady Indiansí goals came in the gameís final 15 minutes.

Whoever wins when the two teams meet at 5:30 p.m. tonight will be the district champ, whoever loses will be No. 2. Should the squads tie, Red Oak wins the distric.

There is still plenty to be determined in the girls side of district on the seasonís final day as only two teams, Waxahachie and Red Oak, have clinched playoff spots.

Three points seperate Corsicana in third and Ferris in fourth. The Yellowjackets will likely beat Lancaster, who has scored one goal all season. If Ferris wins, they clinch a playoff spot and the winner of Ennis and Corsicana will also be in. Should they tie, Corsicana gets in.
