James Elvin Sonnier

James Elvin Sonnier, 92, passed away at home in Red Oak on March 4, after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Vermilion, Lafayette Parish, La., to Nina Mathews Sonnier and Claude Sonnier. Elvin graduated from Sunset High School (Dallas) prior to his service in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After the war he worked many years for Western Electric as a switchboard installer.

As a father of young children, he took his family to many national parks where they camped out and enjoyed the out-of-doors. He was a master “fix it” man and loved his fruit trees, pecan trees and garden.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Coy Ezell; his wife of more than 50 years, Martha Thrasher; and grandson, Aaron McCarver.

Survivors include his daughter, Claudia Melugin and son-in-law, Ron Melugin of Gainesville; son, James Ronald Sonnier and daughter-in-law, Karen Sonnier of Duncanville; son, David E. Sonnier and daughter-in-law, Felippa Sonnier of Mesquite; grandchildren: Stephanie Singleton, James S. Sonnier, Jonathan Sonnier, Joseph Sonnier, Timothy Sonnier and Amanda Sonnier; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
