SAN ANTONIO (AP) Investigators have determined that a South Texas deputy accidentally shot himself in the hand during his 26th birthday party.

Officials at University Hospital in San Antonio say Bexar (bayr) County sheriff's Deputy Eric Espino was in fair and stable condition Tuesday. The off-duty deputy was wounded early Monday during a party at a residence.

Detective Louis Antu says Espino apparently put his hand over the muzzle of a shotgun. Espino was shot in the right hand when he picked up the weapon and it discharged.

Investigators are trying to determine whether alcohol played a role in the wounding of the detention officer.
