SCHRIEVER, La. (AP) — Louisiana State Police say a Texas trucker died when his load of drill pipe shifted and his tractor-trailer toppled from a narrow bridge into a canal in Schriever (SHREE'-vur), leaving only one tire above water.
The Courier reports that divers pulled 30-year-old Otto F. Tello of Channelview from the cab about 90 minutes after the accident Monday morning.
Police said the truck was driving to a rig owned by Brammer Engineering Inc. when the pipes slid backward, knocking the truck off balance and pulling it off the bridge.
Tello was the truck's only occupant. He drove for Houston-based New Energy Transport.
It was the second crash in recent weeks on the one-lane bridge. Police said the earlier wreck was not fatal, but did not have other details.
