Texas Motorplex opened in 1986 after Funny Car legend Billy Meyer decided drag racing deserved a bigger and better stage – so the super-stadium was built.
Fans have been enjoying the blazing-quick speeds and thrills of championship drag racing ever since and 2012 is shaping up to be one of the premier seasons in its history.
This season will offer more great entertainment as Texas Motorplex plays host to dozens of unique feature events that will captivate fans, delight sponsors and encourage participants to put their competitive foot forward.
The Motorplex will feature the 27th annual AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals, the Super Chevy Show, Fun Ford Weekend, a full slate of bracket races, the NHRDA Texas Diesel Nationals, Import Face Off, 20 Fast Friday street legal grudge races, the American Southern Nationals, the ADRL World Finals and more.
There are even some new national events on the schedule that will have people making plans to be in Ennis throughout the year.
New to the Motorplex this year is the newly created Mega Mopar Action Series, which will present Mopars at the Motorplex on May 19. August will be extra hot in Texas when the National Biker Roundup blazes into the region with more than 20,000 bikers from all over the country.
Some of the regular and most popular events, Import Face Off and NHRDA diesel events, have booked a second event for 2012. Both the Import Face Off and NHRDA will have a spring and fall event, including the NHRDA World Finals in October.
The Motorplex will also be one of the stops on the Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week tour on Sept. 11.
“We’ve always been fortunate to have some of the best racing in Texas and now we’ve expanded our schedule to offer even more unique events and we plan to wow the crowd from March through November this year,” Texas Motorplex owner Billy Meyer said. “We know families are always looking for ways to spend their weekends and enjoy themselves and Texas Motorplex is going to be a place for any and all families to come out for some great entertainment.”
The 2012 season will start with a big spring full of some of the best feature events in Texas, including the season’s first Fast Friday on Friday, April 13. Fast Friday events are open to anyone with a driver’s license and a street legal vehicle. Anyone can race like the legends of the sport such as John Force, Tony Schumacher and all the other stars that will invade Texas Motorplex in September.
A completely new addition to the Fast Friday schedule will be the “Versus the World” series prior to each of the three car manufacturer events. Chevy Versus the World will kick off the three-event tour on May 11. Mopar Versus the World on May 18 and Ford Versus the World on Sept. 7.

Texas Motorplex was the first all-concrete stadium-style drag racing facility ever constructed. Built in 1986, Texas Motorplex has been the place of many drag racing milestones and world record performances. The Billy Meyer-owned facility hosts a number of racing and car show events between March and November each year and also features the Champion’s Club – an 11,000 square-foot facility – that serves fully catered events throughout the year.
