MIDLOTHIAN – It was a battle of each team’s ace on Tuesday as the Waxahachie Lady Indians took the diamond against the Midlothian Lady Panthers in the District 16-4A softball opener.

Tori Banda was on the mound for Waxahachie while Tori Benavidez toed the slab for Midlothian.

Benavidez allowed just two hits over six innings as Midlothian defeated the Lady Indians 6-0.

After a scoreless first inning Midlothian took complete control of the game behind the pitching of Benavidez. She fanned 12 Lady Indians and was really only threatened once as she had the Lady Indian hitters off-balance.

The Lady Indians had runners on second and third in the top of the third trailing 2-0 with two outs before Benavidez fanned the final hitter of the inning to snuff out the only real threat of the night.  “That was big,” said Indian head coach Jim Miller. “If we can scratch across a couple of runs there who knows how it could have turned out.”

The Lady Panthers scored six runs, three of which were unearned, as the Lady Indians had some miscues that were costly. Midlothian (8-0, 1-0) had six hits, five of which came from two players.

Benavidez helped her own cause with a pair of hits, a triple and a single, and Whitney Bankston added a pair of singles.

The big blow came in the third inning as Hillary Heisroth singled in a pair of runs after a Waxahachie error in the field kept the inning alive for the Panthers.

Waxahachie’s (4-3, 0-1) two hits came from Tori Banda and Tiffany Haines.

Benavidez gave way to Whitney Cowley in the seventh inning and Kate Martin singled off of her for the Indians’ other hit on the night.

Banda struck out six in the game. She is now 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in district play.

Vitela drove in a run in the first inning to give the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead.

Midlothian rallied back in the bottom of the first with five runs. The Lady Panthers scored three in the second and five in the third to win the game.
