Opening the 2009 track season in Red Oak, the Waxahachie Lady Indians performed exceptionally well despite the fact they were short several athletes.

Waxahachie’s varsity team earned second place in the meet with a total of 124 points while the Lady Indians junior varsity team claimed first place in the JV division with 141 points.

“I have never been more proud of a bunch of kids. They really did a great job and competed well. This is the best result for a first track meet since I have been here. These kids have being working really hard and it paid off for them. We compete in Forney next Saturday against much tougher competition but are really excited about the results so far,” Waxahachie coach Dana Scott said.

Five varsity Lady Indians earned first place in their event during the meet.

LaDaeshia “Dae Dae” Davis claimed first place in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet. She finished third in both the triple jump (33’11’’) and 400-meter dash (1:01.35).

Brooke Glass earned first place in the discus with a throw of 99’11’’ while Meredith Backus placed first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.76.

Freshman Elizabeth Martinez claimed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:36.46 in her first varsity meet. She also claimed third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:03.28.

Waxahachie’s 800-meter relay team finished first with a time of 1:49.10. Members of the team were Cacyie Barrett, Sha’Ryan Davis, Hannah Bush and Stevetia Turner.

Midlothian claimed first place in the tournament with 161 points.

The Lady Indians’ next meet is scheduled for March 7 in Forney.

In the junior varsity division the Lady Indians placed first in seven events.

Jessica Walker (high jump 4’6’’), Sophie Stevens (triple jump 25’3/4’’), Kraneshia Overton (shot put 35’), Tori Bingham (300-meter hurdles 54.6) and all three relay teams earned first place for Waxahachie.

The 400-meter relay team (Jory Hamilton, Codi Hunt, Shabria Sargent, Kranesha Overton) crossed the line with a time of 53.77 while the 800-meter relay team (Jory Hamilton, Codi Hunt, Shabria Sargent, Tori Bingham) crossed with a time of 1:58.39.

The 1,600-meter relay team (Jory Hamilton, Codi Hunt, Tori Bingham, Taylor Spradling) finished with a time of 4:48.55.
