With a balanced offensive attack the Venus Bulldogs opened the 2009 season with a victory as they defeated Fort Worth Carter-Riverside 24-9.
The win matched the teams total amount of wins from 2008 as the program is under the direction of Buddy Hardin.
Venus took an 18-2 halftime lead as Julio Rodriguez found the endzone twice.
He scored on a 51-yard run in the first quarter and a 15-yard pass from Devin Baker later in the quarter.
Following the touchdown pass the extra point was blocked and returned for two points.
In the second quarter Baker connected with Cody Worrell on an 81-yard touchdown pass to give Venus the 18-2 halftime lead.
The final points of the game for Venus came in the fourth quarter as Rodriguez rushed in from two-yards out.
Baker finished the night 6-of-12 for 136 yards.
Rodriguez led in rushing with 126 yards on 12 carries while Worrell rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries.
Zach Murrey rushed for 13 yards on four carries.
Worrell led in receiving with 106 yards on three receptions.
Defensive standouts were Julio Rodriguez, Walker Hargrove, Ben Spivey and Thomas Davis.
†Entering the game as 31-point underdogs, Venus recorded 11 first downs to Riversidesí five.
Next up for the Bulldogs (1-0) will be Fort Worth Diamond Hill Jarvis. Last season the Bulldogs defeated Jarvis 20-6.
