For the second straight year the Warriors green team swept though the Cleburne Tournament.

Last year as seventh graders and again this past weekend Waxahachie brought home the gold.

With three big wins this weekend you can tell it was a momentum builder for new head Coach Josh Holt.

The Warriors improve to 5-2 on the season with a 2-2 district record.

Waxahachie drew Granbury in the opening round, a team they would dominate in all four periods in route to a 62-29 victory.

The WJHS offensive attack was led by Devin Chandler with a team high 10 points. Bubba Itson, Blake Gonzales and Ryan Wilt all finished with nine a piece.

In the second round it was a rematch with Burleson Kerr, which the Warriors were able to outlast in back to back seasons.

Waxahachie topped the Cougars 52-39, with three Warriors dropping in double figurers. Chandler and Austin Combs finished with 13 each and Itson added 12 to clinch a spot in the championship game.

The final match-up was an exciting barn burner that went to the wire.

WJHS escaped the Joshua Owls in a see-saw battle 47-46.

Leading the offensive attack was Combs, Chandler and Itson. Combs with hot hand scored a game high 20 points. Chandler added 12 and Itson dropped in 11 as the Warriors claimed the gold.

“Even though we lost to Everman and Lancaster, Joshua is the best team we’ve played,” Bubba Itson said. “If we can beat them we should beat everybody in district.”

In district action the Warriors opened up with a big road win over Corsicana. WJHS then hit a two game skid falling to Everman and Lancaster, before rebounding with an overtime victory over Ennis last week.
