There were a few local players who competed well during a junior varsity tournament held at Waxahachie High School, Thursday.
Among them were Jesse Van Wey, of Ferris, and a couple of Ennis High School athletes, Linda Salguero and Sarah Lucas.
Van Wey won two matches against players from Red Oak and McKinney, before losing to an athlete from Winnsboro in the third round. One of his wins was against Garrett Lambert but the Red Oak player was able to make up for his first round loss when he beat Ennis’ Dillon Duren in the consolation round.
Another player to do well was Red Oak’s Johnathan Verdine, who beat a Groesbeck player in the first round. Gabe Trejo, of Ferris, lost his first round match but rebounded with a win in consolation against a Winona player.
Among the other tennis players to compete were Ennis’ Aaron Lee.
In girls’ play, Ennis’ Saraah Lucas lost in the first round but then won her next two matches in the consolation bracket against players from Red Oak and Corsicana. The Red Oak player she defeated was Cecily Molina.
Another Ennis player, Lynda Salguero, did very well. She had a first round bye and lost to a Winona player. But it was in consolation bracket where she went on a real tear. Salguero beat Red Oak’s Morgan McCurley, Waxahachie’s Kristi Clem and Jackie Holden.
Red Oak’s Celine Kluyskens won a first round match against Waxahachie’s Caitlin Sevier. Ennis’ Bethany Wolaver beat Waxahachie’s Holden but lost to a Tyler Lee player.
Results of the doubles matches, which were played at the Ennis Tennis Center, were not available.
