lifeguards

The Waxahachie YMCA is hiring swim instructors and lifeguards for the coming swim season. A lifeguard certification is at the Waxahachie YMCA from May 4-10. The swim instructor training is in Dallas on May 7-8 and June 7-8.

Charity golf event

The Walgreens Distribution Center will be hosting its annual charity golf event at 8 a.m.† May 3, at the Old Brickyard Golf Course in Ferris.

This event will be a fundraiser and all proceeds will be donated to Goodwill of Dallas. The cost per person is $60, which includes all green fees, cart and lunch.

Numerous free gifts and prizes will be given away and there will be four chances to win a new car for any lucky participant that can score a hole in one (sponsored by the Thornhill Auto Group in Waxahachie and Metroplex Toyota in Duncanville).

Joe Jenkins, mayor of Waxahachie, will be on hand to greet the participants of this charity drive.

JUNE

SAGU baseball camp

A baseball camp is scheduled 8:30 a.m.- noon June 17-19 from at the SAGU baseball practice field for children ages 8 through teenagers who will be starting eighth grade. The camp will feature college instruction on hitting, pitching, fielding and base running. Hitting and base running is June 17, pitching and fielding is June 18 and June 19 is for all phases of the game. Summer basketball camp

Ellis County Elite Basketball has one camp available at Red Oak Junior High and next door at Acorn Academy Gym from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. July 7-18 from for players ages 5-17.

Players will be instructed in various ways to improve their basketball skills. Cost is $140.

Basketball camp

Scott Vaughn will host a Canterbury Episcopal School summer basketball camp at Bishops Gymnasium at CES from June 23-26. Contact Vaughn at 972-890-7280.

Free tennis camp

Waxahachie High School will be the site of a free tennis camp scheduled from 9 a.m.-noon, June 23-25 for boys and girls who attend Waxahachie ISD schools and will be ages 6-14 at the time of the event.

Perry Nutt, Indians tennis coach, said the camp is an opportunity for youth to learn the fundamentals of a sport they may have an interest in participating in, but have not been given the chance to do so. He also adds that kids who donít bring a racquet will not be turned away. There will be members of the varsity team assisting in the camp. Nutt said there would be liquids and tennis balls available to participants.

Depending on the turnout, matches between campers could also be played.

Baseball camp

Golf clinic
