The Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball recruiting checklist that Head Coach Greg Hayes started when the season ended in April began with getting healthy from the Lions most injured season of all time. The next step was to build around a pitching staff nucleus that finished third in the division in ERA.
With the signings of Josiah Hensley, Cam Ward, Josh Black and John DelaGarza, Hayes put a big ‘check’ next to that part of the list.
Then came the need to replace eligibility expired first baseman Joe Davila and to gain depth at the catcher position.
With two more signings last week, the baseball Lions have started to complete this part of the checklist.
Joining SAGU in the fall and getting the chance to keep playing with his teammate from Avalon, Derrick Brunner. Brunner is a three-time First Team All-District First baseman. The only time Brunner did not make the first team squad was his freshman year, when we was a second team selection.
Transferring from Paris Junior College to behind the SAGU plate is Rance Melton. Three times Melton was a first team All-State Catcher from Blooming Grove, TX. Melton also was Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and All-American Honorable Mention.
“We are really excited about our recruiting season to this point,” Head Coach Greg Hayes continued, “But we expect a signing more or two that will round out our depth around the infield.”
To the Lions depth may mean everything. Last years opening day lineup saw eight of nine players injured at some point during the season, severely handicapping a team that previously won 20 games in 2005.
