In preparation for the fall sports season, athletes from four teams report to camp this weekend at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Members of the football, volleyball and both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will be competing to don the Lions’ purple and gold this year.

The sideline of the soccer pitch will see two new head coaches. Mandy Fortner, an assistant the past two years, takes the reins of the women’s soccer team, while Gerald Nichols commences his inaugural campaign leading the men. The Lady Lions and Lions are the first to enter camp today, Aug. 12.

SAGU soccer teams will be adjusting to more than new coaches and record-setting Texas heat. Players open a pair of new practice fields to go along with the Lions’ home turf.

Added to those factors is the calendar. The teams have an early doubleheader of exhibition matches on Tuesday, Aug. 16, when they travel 240 miles to Snyder to tangle with Western Texas College. The Lady Lions play at 1 p.m. while the Lions scrimmage the Westerners at 3.

The SAGU soccer teams kick off the regular season on Saturday, Aug. 20, with a pair of home games against Wayland Baptist University. The Lady Lions play the Pioneers at 11 a.m. before the Lions launch their season at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the public. Southwestern Field is located on campus, just north of the Shaffer Center.

Hansford “Hank” Moore, the dean of Southwestern’s head coaches, starts his 11th season of directing the women’s volleyball team. Players check in on Sunday.

SAGU has produced a winning regular season record in six consecutive years. The first serve by the Lady Lions takes place in Oklahoma during a tournament on Aug. 26-27 at Southern Nazarene University.

Head football coach and athletic director Jesse Godding is beginning his 10th year at the helm of the football Lions, who check in Monday, Aug. 15. Southwestern will host East Texas Baptist University in a 6 p.m. scrimmage Aug. 26 at old Midlothian High School Stadium.

The Lions kick off the season in Kansas on Sept. 3 with a 6 p.m. clash with Bethany College.
