The Corsicana Tigers (1-7) came into the game as cold as the weather outside Goerge W. Solis Gymnasium last night.
The Tigers missed every shot taken from the floor in the first 6:15 of the game before Triston Jones pulled down an offensive rebound and put the ball in to make the score 10-4 with 1:45 showing on the first period clock.
Waxahachie (5-2) hit the floor running as Ryan Wilson hit the first shot of the game, from behind the 3-point arc, starting an 8-0 run for the host team.
Waxahachie built a 14-7 lead after the first quarter and took a 31-17 lead into the intermission.
“We played well the first half,” Waxahachie coach Lonnie Gaylor said. “But, we stopped pounding the ball inside in the third quarter and let them (Corsicana) back into the game.”
The tandem of Gary Mason Jr. on the inside and Ryan Wilson on the outside caused considerable damage in the first half. Mason had 13 of his 24 game high points in the first half, while Wilson hit three long range bombs and a pair of charity tosses for 11 of his 13 points in the first 16 minutes.
The third period belonged to the Tigers, as the visitors outscored the Tribe 16-8.
Trailing by six to start the fourth period, Corsicana continued the onslaught.
LaQuintis Holbert hit the back end of a pair of free throws and Omarius Hines added a jump hook in the paint to cut the lead to 39-36. A tip-in was put in by the Hachie defense, with credit for the bucket going to Johnny Guions.
Mason scored on the inside to stop a 7-point Corsicana run. With 3:02 to play in the game, Aaron Gant canned a 3-point shot to tie the score at 41.
Waxahachie responded with a 6 point run by getting the ball on the inside to Mason, who made a bucket and a free throw. Then Roderick Jefferson hit 3 of 4 charity tosses to give the Green Machine a 47-41 lead.
Forced to foul, Corsicana could only watch as Dominique Carson hit a foul shot and Wilson add two charity tosses.
Mason (8) and Jefferson (8) led the Tribe in rebounding.
The win puts Waxahachie in a tie with Midlothian, losers to Arlington Seguin 65-50 in overtime, for second place in the district race for the playoffs.
