RED OAK — Red Oak scored another impressive victory Friday night as it defeated the Thomas Jefferson Patriots 55-6.
Red Oak dominated in all phases of the game holding the Patriots to just four first downs the entire game. Red Oak head coach Mike Shields said after the game that he was proud of the way his team played and expects the Hawks to play that well when they properly execute the game plan.
Red Oak forced a three and out on Thomas Jefferson’s first offensive possession, which became a recurring theme throughout the night, and stuffed the Patriots on an attempted fake punt to give the Hawks possession on the Patriots 30-yard line.
Two plays later Red Oak quarterback Kevin Pruett connected with wide out Seth Rushing on a wide receiver screen pass that Rushing took the distance for a 30-yard touchdown. Red Oak took the 7-0 lead and never looked back.
Thomas Jefferson suffered another three and out on their following possession and Red Oak again started inside the Patriots 50. After a 41-yard run by Nic Boyd, Rushing scored his second touchdown of the game - this time on the ground for a 9-yard touchdown scamper.
In its ensuing possession Thomas Jefferson still couldn’t manage to produce any positive yards on offense and for the third straight possession were forced to punt. For the third consecutive time Red Oak began its drive in Patriot territory, this time at the Patriots 27-yard line. One play later, the Hawks were up 21-0 as Pruett connected on his second touchdown pass of the game, this time to wide receiver Jordan Stanford. The Hawks would score two more times through the air before the end of the first quarter, the first coming on a 9-yarder to Jeremy Thibodeaux and the second a 15-yarder to Brandon Valzen.
Pruett said after the game that he knew going into this week he was going to get his chance to throw in this game and he was glad he took advantage of the opportunity. Pruett took full advantage Friday night completing 8 of 9 passes for 130 yards and four touchdowns. Red Oak ended the first quarter up 34-0.
The second quarter was much like the first as Red Oak continued to hold Thomas Jefferson to three and outs and time after time found themselves with good field position. The only difference was Red Oak managed to score 7 points in the second quarter as Nic Boyd scored his first and only touchdown of the game on a 44-yard run, on the first play of the second quarter.
Red Oak scored twice more in the second half. The first on a 12-yard run by Pruett and the second on a 10-yard run by backup running back Timmy Hooper. The two scores put Red Oak up 55-0.
Thomas Jefferson did manage to put together a touchdown drive late as Patriot quarterback Gilberto Briones scored on a 10-yard bootleg to close the gap to 49. The Hawks ran out the clock on its next possession giving Red Oak an impressive 55-6 victory over the Thomas Jefferson Patriots.
Red Oak (3-1) has next week off before the Hawks begin district play in Waxahachie October 5.
