AUSTIN — Red Oak’s Corwin Pace and Michael Carter each earned medals on the first day of the state track meet in Austin on Friday.

Pace, competing in the discus, finished second with a throw of 180-11, less than nine feet behind the winner from Longview Pine Tree.

Carter, who won the regional meet two weeks ago, took third at Friday’s meet with a distance of 55-5.5.

He was less than two feet behind the winner from Corpus Christi Calallen. Heading into his final throw, Carter was sitting in fourth place.

While Pace and Carter were the only Ellis County athletes to earn medals, three others participated in the state meet.

She was six inches from finishing in a tie for third and was 15 inches behind the winner from Buda Hays.

Barajas finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-0.25 and Deal placed seventh with a time of 12:32.85.

Other members of Maypearl’s relay team were Darrell Ashlock, Curtis Wishart and Taylor Beck.
