HICO - The Woodson Cowboys (10-2) eliminated the Milford Bulldogs (10-1) from the UIL 6-man playoffs for the second consecutive season with a 58-12 win in Hico Friday night.
The Cowboys behind the running of Robert Perez jumped to an early 20-0 lead early in the second quarter. But, Derek Williamson responded with a kickoff return of 73 yards for a touchdown to put Milford back into the game. After a defensive stop, the Dawgs got on the scoreboard again with an unusual touchdown play. Malcom Wadley threw a 30-yard strike to Jamaar Davis. Davis fumbled at the Cowboy 9-yard line, but DeMarcus MaGruder scooped the ball up and ran into the end zone for the score.
With only three minutes left in the half, Woodson mounted a drive that was capped off with a 10 yard touchdown run. Woodson missed the point after but led on the board 28-12.
“We came back on them to make a game of it,” assistant coach Ronny Crumpton said. “But we allowed them to go up 28-12 with a late second quarter score to give them momentum going into the locker room.”
Milford had the ball to start the third quarter. Driving all with way to the red zone, Milford looked as if it had finally gained the rhythm that had been missing in the first half. Perez, broke the Milford drive when he made the play of the game.
Leaping high and reaching back, he made a very athletic one handed catch for the interception. He then scampered 72 yards on the return for the touchdown to put Woodson up 36-12.
Perez would add touchdown runs of 1, 3 and 3 yards to end the scoring on the evening.
“Woodson was very physical,” Crumpton said. “But, the touchdown at the end of the second quarter and the interception for a touchdown to start the third quarter really hurt us. But, that interception was a tremendous play by a very good player.”
The Region III semifinal loss was the last time for seniors Malcom Wadley, Avery Love, Ruben Garza, Craig Deckard, Ricky Teal and Doug Moore to suit up for the Bulldog football team.
Woodson will play defending state champion Vernon Northside for the Region III title next week.
