Facing their former coach, the Waxahachie Indian freshman basketball team fell to Hewitt Midway, 42-39, on Friday night in J.W. Williams Gym.
“We played really good but Midway made the most of their shots in the second half,” Waxahachie coach Derek Zandt said. “Midway is a good team, they have only lost one district game.”
Waxahachie raced out to a 9-1 lead after the first period of play before taking a 19-6 lead into the half.
Midway chipped away at the lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Indians 13-6.
Heading in to the fourth period, the Indians led 25-19.
The Panthers hit four 3-pointers in the second half and outscored Waxahachie 23-14 in the final period to take the win.
Ten players scored for the Indians as the team dropped to 12-10 on the season and 4-3 in district play.
Ryan Wilt led the Indians in scoring with seven points.
Other Indians with points in the game were Josh Durling (1), Devin Chandler (2), Blake Gonzalez (2), Yusef Reown (5), Aaron Middleton (3), Austin Combs (6), Don King III (6), Sterling Horning (5) and Zach Rieper (3).
The Indians will play at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Midlothian to open the second half of district play.
