The Midlothian Panther wrestling program is in its sixth season and remains the only high school mat team in Ellis County.
Coached by Bill Smith, the Panthers compete with Class 5A and 4A schools in the area as all schools that have wrestling programs are lumped together.
“This way you are up against everyone. If you are the champion in your weight class, you are the one true state champion,” Smith said.
The Panthers compete in District 16 along with Coppell, Irving High School, Irving Nimitz, Irving MacArthur, Grand Prairie and South Grand Prairie.
The Panthers were in action this weekend with the boys at Frisco Centennial in dual competition on Friday. The team defeated Irving Nimitz 54 - 18. Kyle Gillespie and Keenan Potter took fourth in the individual tournament on Saturday. Janlyn Jerome, Jessica Lemmer, Sarah Stewart, Elyse Mims and Patty Coronado represented the girls’ team in Frisco.
Against Dallas Molina MHS took a 54-24 win. Getting wins were Little, Le, Jack Latham, Cainen Cox, Adam Wakeland, Dillion Wilson, Justin Damiano, Brad Crabtree and Todd Valderas.
