DUNCANVILLE — If the Midlothian hockey team was any hotter, the players would be melting the ice they play on.

The team continues to move up in AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League standings where it has sole possession of ninth place.

Only the top eight teams advance to the playoffs and there are nine games left in the season.

An 8-3 beating of Plano East provided the antidote for excitement for the players as they won their second consecutive game and their fourth in the last five games.

It is the third time that Midlothian (7-8) has won two straight games and will try to add to that streak when it faces North Crowley (6-9) at the Dr Pepper StarCenter next week.

Matt Bassett, the team’s leading scorer for points and goals, led off with a goal in the first period. In fact, it was his first goal in three games, dating back to Dec. 18 against Richardson in a 10-5 win.

But his teammates have filled in offensively.

Among the players to get goals were Hardy Walker and Dave Scott, who each earned two; Brent Jones, McClain Williamson and Trent Newman each had a goal.

What was more impressive was the defensive intensity that Midlothian continued to display after leading by as much as 5-1 late in the second period.

“You don’t want to lose a lead like that, including your composure,” Midlothian goalie Cody Alonso said. “You have to keep your mind in it because no matter what, the other team can come back. I’ve seen it happen, not against a team I was in, but in a different (league) to another team and it feels bad, it wasn’t pretty.”

Midlothian was in on most Plano East offensive setups.  Alonso thwarted 28 shots on goal.
