Coach Rick Carlisle’s rant during a second-quarter timeout fired up the Mavericks and pushed them to a 102-92 victory over the Washington Wizards Monday night. The Wizards are now 0-24 on the road.
“I was mad…. At that point, we were playing a losing brand of basketball and they will tell you the same thing. We picked it up at both ends and we started competing better,” Carlisle said about the rant.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points, Tyson Chandler added 18 points and 18 rebounds, Jason Terry earned 14 points and eight assists and Shawn Marion contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Jason Kidd also had 11 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for the Mavericks.
The Wizards led by 12 in the second quarter before the Mavs fought back with a 10-4 run to end the half up 50-49.
Both teams shot poorly from the free throw line with Washington going 19-for-31 and Dallas 25-for-37.
Some key plays by Nowitzki and Kidd sealed the win for Dallas. With 6:51 remaining, Nowitzki converted a four-point play, followed by a jumper. Kidd closed the gap with a 3-pointer and Chandler was there for a rebound off Kidd to end the game.
Former Maverick Josh Howard missed his 13th straight game for the Wizards with a sore left knee.
vs. New York Knicks
The Dallas Mavericks dominated the Knicks in a 113-97 win at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points and became the 24th NBA player to earn his 22,000 point. JJ Barea added 22 points and three assists off the bench.
“There’s a guy who’s worked more on developing his game than anybody in the history of the league,” said Rick Carlisle about Nowitzki.
The Mavericks outscored the Knicks 54-34 on the boards and from beyond the arc. Dallas was 11-for-25 from deep in the court while the Knicks were only 6-of-23.
The Mavericks came out on fire in the third quarter, outscored the Knicks 30-21 to gain a 86-73 lead going into the fourth.
In the last five games, the Mavericks have scored at least 102 points and at least 111 three times.
vs. Boston Celtics
The Mavericks are back to their old selves, earning a 101-97 win over the Boston Celtics Friday night in Boston.
Jason Kidd hit the game-winning three-pointer with just 2.5 seconds left. This was the last basket in a 10-0 run in a come-from-behind victory.
The Mavericks and the Celtics are the most efficient offenses in the NBA, combining for 61 points in the first 12 minutes and hitting 67.5 percent of their field goals.
“I loved the way our guys battled. It comes down to a make or miss here or there, that’s how close it was. Kidd’s shot was huge and we got the stops we needed,” said Carlisle after the win.
The Celtics’ defense fell apart in the second half as Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 of his 29 game-high points in the final 24 minutes. Kevin Garnett also contributed to the loss as he missed nine of his final 10 shots, including an open jumper that could’ve furthered the Celtics lead.
The Mavericks swept the season series with Boston and will next play the Cleveland Cavaliers in Dallas Monday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 and the game will on FSSW.
