GRANBURY — After running up 66 runs in five games, the 8U Marlins finally ran out of gas.

Playing a doubleheader Friday, the team won the first game in order to reach the championship of the USSSA World Series.

After a 10-minute break between games the Marlins fell to the Grand Prairie Cardinals 7-1.

“We just ran out of steam in the second game,” coach Armando Sanchez said. “We only had about 10 minutes between games and our kids were just too tired. We had some that were so tired they were laying on the ground between innings.”

The loss in the finals will not keep the Marlins from celebrating their second-place finish.

The team scored 67 runs while allowing only 23 and scored 10 or more runs in five of their seven games.

“We’re very proud of the kids and how they played all week,” Sanchez said. “There’s nothing you can do when your body is just tired. The kids gave it everything they had.”

The Marlins also won the zone tournament last month and went 1-1 at the state tournament.
