SAN ANGELO,  Texas – The Southern Arkansas volleyball team had a rough start to its 2009 season, dropping four matches over the weekend in the Angelo Retina Angelo State Invitational.

The Lady Muleriders (0-4) suffered 3-0 shutouts to Texas A&M-Commerce (1-0) and East Central (Okla.) (1-0) on Friday, and were swept 3-0 by host Angelo State (3-0) and fell 3-1 to Incarnate Word (Texas) (3-0) Saturday.

SAU was led by senior outside hitter Danielle Sneed (Duncanville,  Texas), who combined for 46 kills over the four matches. Pre-season All-Gulf South Conference junior middle blocker Maggie (Ross) Glover (Waxahachie, Texas) posted 30 kills and five blocks, and freshman defensive specialist Crystal Roberts (Hutto, Texas) tallied 49 digs.

Fourth-year Southern Arkansas coach Brooke White entered the season with a young squad, with Sneed being the only senior. All five first-year players on the team, including four true freshmen, participated in the weekend invitational.

SAGU now 3-0

The Southwestern Assemblies of God Lady Lions cleared an early season hurdle when they defeated Southern Nazarene in a best-of-five match, three sets to one, in Bethany, Oklahoma.

It completed a 3-0 day after beating Mid-America Christian and Oklahoma Panhandle State in Oklahoma City earlier.

The Lady Lions took the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-17, before the Crimson Storm regrouped to win 25-21. SAGU earned the victory when it rallied for a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Jordan Briggs (Maypearl, Texas), a 5’8 junior, had 15 services points and 3 aces vs. SNU.
