AISD begins search for coach, cancels camps

Alvarado ISD's new athletic director already received his first coaching position to fill.
Former boys' soccer coach Scott Gutowski has formally resigned as both coach and teacher for the Alvarado school district.
Gutowski told school officials about his plan to resign early in the spring semester.
Recently promoted athletic director Jeff Dixon said he believes Gutowski's resignation came from a wanting to be closer to home.
"I know that personally he wanted to go back home and teach in Arlington," Dixon said. "He will just be teaching and not coaching at Arlington Lamar."
Dixon said this will help free up Gutowski's schedule, but they are going to miss him.
"I don't know all the ins and outs of it," Dixon said. "I just know we hated to lose him."
Gutowski's resignation also led to the cancellation of this summer's soccer camps, which were originally scheduled for June 11-14.
What Dixon liked most about Gutowski was the way he ran his program and how he worked with his athletes.
"He didn't coach with his hands in his pockets," Dixon said. "He took pride in his program. He took the kids and tried to make them better."
The plan for Dixon now is to find someone to fill the void left by Gutowski.
"I have to find another soccer coach who teaches either Spanish or science," Dixon said.
The first step in finding a replacement has already been done.
"I posted the job on our Web site and on other coaching Web sites." Dixon said.
The athletic director's goal is to continue to improve Alvarado athletics and to do that he will take the best coach he can find.
"I am looking for the best coach out there," Dixon said. "He doesn't have to be from the area. We are trying to make Alvarado athletics proud again."
At press time, Gutowski was unable to be reached for comment.
