The Midlothian Panthers let one slip away at The Arena last Tuesday night when Lancaster came in to settle the dispute about who is top dog midway through District 15-4A play.
Both teams put their undefeated records on the line and the result was a barn burner of a game.
The teams battled to a 17-15 margin at the end of the first period with Midlothian managing the slim lead.
The second quarter was just as hard fought but the home town Panthers were able to take a 33-26 lead into the intermission.
The third quarter was pivotal as Lancaster blistered the nets for 17 points while holding the Panthers to just six points.
Midlothian rebounded to win the fourth quarter 15-12 but it was not enough as Lancaster got on the yellow bus with the one point victory and bragging rights for the first half of district play.
With Firday night off, the Panthers can only think about what could have been, as there were multiple points where the outcome could have been different.
The Panthers will face Arlington Seguin at home on Tuesday with a Friday trip to Ennis.
