Three Waxahachie girls cleared double-figures in scoring as the Lady Indians cruised to a 53-24 win over district rival Red Oak in summer league action.
Tambra Henry led the charge with 15 points for the game, 10 of which came in the first half. Jamayia Perez was held to just three free throws in the first half but erupted in the second half with 10 more points to finish at 13. The final player to cross 10 was post presence Shanquel Wheaton who continued her strong start to the summer league by putting in another 11. Wheaton scored 16 in the summer league opener against Kennedale giving her 37 of the teamís 104 total points scored thus far.
Waxahachie opened the game with an 8-0 run and finished the first half on another 8-0 run for a 33-7 lead. The Lady Indians extended that late run with five more points to start the second half before Red Oakís Jordan Lawrence responded with three straight baskets during a 10-4 Lady Hawk run.
Lawrence, a rising freshman, finished the game with a team-high nine points. Ashlie Sanders was the only other Red Oak player with multiple baskets on the day as she finished with four points.
Up 43-17 midway through the second half, Waxahachie began received fouls from Red Oak to slow the pace of the game. The Lady Indians responded by going 8-of-10 from the line to seal the win.
Ferris rallies back to best Venus
Early struggles for both Ferris and Venus made for a slow start in the teamís summer league debuts as the two squads combined for eight turnovers, five misses and an offensive foul in the first 5:47 of the game. Both teams finally got on track, producing a 41-28 Ferris win in the end.
The Lady Bulldogs opened with the gameís first bucket at the 14:13 mark and held an 8-2 lead early. Ferris rallied back with a 12-0 run and held an 18-16 lead at halftime.
Venus responded to the challenge in the second half by going on a 10-0 run early on to earn a 28-22 lead. But the offensive effort ended there for the Lady Bulldogs as Ferris went on a 19-0 run to close the game.
Vicki McGuire and Tiara Abrone tied for the scoring lead for Ferris with 11 points each. Priscilla Alanis was next with six points. For Venus. Darian Gent led the way with 14 points including 10 in the first half. Teammate Payton Belcher added six.
Waxahachie 3 knocks off Waxahachie 2
A hodgepodge of Lady Indian players combined for the final summer league game of the day as players from Waxahachie formed two teams to cap the days action. The Waxahachie 3 team rallied back from an early deficit to close the first half on a 10-2 run leading to a 22-16 lead en route to a 37-29 win.
Technical problems with the scoreboard made things complicated to keep up with but the Waxahachie 3 team found the basket with ease. The No. 3 team used a 7-1 run late in the game to seal the victory and go up by double-digits for the first time in the game.
