ITALY - If the first game of the season is any indication of what to expect from Coach Kyle Holley’s Italy Gladiators, it will be an exciting year for Gladiator fans.
Italy had four of its players in double digits. From the tip off to the final buzzer, Italy was relentless on both sides of the ball. Italy was rewarded for its efforts with a 80-65 win over Dallas Life.
The opening quarter had both teams evenly matched and ended in a 12-12 tie.
The Gladiators came alive in the second to go on a 7-0 run, outscoring the Lions 30-17.
Life came back in the third quarter and put up seven more points than the Gladiators did to pull within six.
Their hopes of a win were short lived when Italy lit up the boards in the final quarter. Italy scored 28 points to Life’s 19.
One of the challenges the Gladiators faced in the game was trying to contain Life’s Taylor Henry. No matter what the Gladiators threw at him, he still drove to the basket and hit the boards.
The entire Gladiator team fits right in with Holley’s coaching style - fast paced from beginning to end. The Italy bench is strong, so strong that they scored half of the teamâs points on the night. Steve Caballero and Jasenio Anderson came off the bench to score 19 and 16 points respectively.
“We only had four days to practice to get ready for tonight,” Coach Holley said.
“When a game is as fast paced as this one was, you have ups and downs. We did a good job. I am very pleased with our effort.
