CORSICANA - The Waxahachie Indians freshman basketball team defated the Corsicana Tigers, 47-31, Tuesday night at Corsicana High School.
Waxahachie took a 15-9 lead after one period of play before nursing a three-point lead, 22-19, at the half. In the third period, the Indians put some distance between the two teams outscoring Corsicana 11-5 to take a 33-24 lead into the final period.
Corsicana’s only lead was early in the game after they hit a three pointer on their first possession to make the score 3-2.
“We did a good job on defense only holding them to 31 points,” Waxahachie coach Derek Zandt said. “We helped them out a little bit by getting a steal and then giving it right back to them by turning the ball over. Overall, I am proud of my kids for working hard for a tough win. They showed a lot of poise tonight.”
With the win the Indians improved to 12-9 on the season and 4-2 in district play. Friday, the Indians will conclude the first part of district play against Hewitt Midway in Waxahachie. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Against Corsicana Don King III led the Indians in scoring with 11 points. Austin Combs scored nine points while Blake Gonzalez and Ryan Wilt each had eight points.
Other Indians with points in the game were Devin Chandler (5), Aaron Middleton (4), Sterling Horning (4), Yuseff Reown (3) and Zack Rieper (1).
