GRAND PRAIRIE — During the regular season, the Ferris Yellow Jackets lost to Carrollton Ranchview by double digits and that setback was exactly what coach James Rogers said his team needed for motivation months later in the playoffs in a 74-58 win, at South Grand Prairie High School, Tuesday.
Ferris advances to the Class 2A area round against Argyle, at Grand Prairie High School, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Friday.
“Sometimes butt whooping will wake you up and it did for us; we responded real well, tonight,” Rogers said.
With Ranchview trailing by a 52-51 score early in the fourth quarter, the Jackets pulled away when they went on a 12-0 run. The best part for Ferris was that the points came through second chance rebounds, fast breaks and baskets in the paint.
“We executed real well in this game; we went over their offense, knew their game plan and did very well,” said Casey Leamon, whose three-pointer with 5:12 left in the game gave Ferris a 10-point lead.
Ranchview called a timeout to stop the offensive onslaught but it didn’t seem to work as Ferris players continued to pour it on, getting the next six points. On a couple of those scoring plays, Paul Alexander and Tanner Bodine were fouled following a basket.
Tevin Richard led the Jackets in scoring with 20 points; Alexander followed with 15 points. Leamon scored 13 points and Bodine had 12 points.
Jeremy Masterson (8) and Emmanuel Grady (6) also scored.
Ferris came back from a district championship loss against Kaufman at home.
Masterson said Rogers instilled in them not to let that game affect them in the playoffs.
“Coach did tell us that we needed to focus on the playoffs now, we’ve all but forgotten about Kaufman,” Masterson said.
Maypearl defeated McGregor, 68-37, in a game played at Whitney High School.
R.J. Miskimon scored a game-high 19 points. Jake Pruitt added 15 points and Blake Salter 11 points.
Maypearl advances to play Edgewood on Friday.
Italy and Milford are also scheduled to play Friday. Italy plays Menard. A score on the Red Oak Life/Henrietta game was not available.
Red Oak fell to Waco University, at Italy High School, Tuesday.
