The Waxahachie Sports Complex was host of the Texas Association of Amateur Athletics’ Class B/C Church League State Tournament last weekend.
Teams came in from as far as Houston, but it was Christian Center of Mesquite that took first place, beating Ferris Avenue Baptist Church in the final game.
Of the three Ellis County teams that played in the 11-team tournament, two placed in the top four.
City Parks and Recreation Director, James Villareal, believes the success will lead to more teams participating in future tournaments.
“A lot of teams have a fear of the unknown,” he said. “As more teams from our area compete and do well, more will come out. The word ‘state’ is scary, but it’s still just softball.”
Ferris Avenue reached the final game after going through the Loser’s Bracket. They then beat Christian Center to force a deciding game.
The Complex will host the Men’s Class B ASA National Tournament in September.
