The Ennis Lady Lion junor varsity escaped Waxahachie with a 49-45 win in overtime.
“My kids played hard the whole game, but came up a little short,” Waxahachie coach Dana Scott said.
“I am proud of their effort. Defensively we did a great job in the second half running our trapping zone defense. We were able to get several steals right away to start the third quarter to get us back into the game.”
Offensively the Tribe struggled in the opening half, but came around strong in the second.
“Free throws really hurt us,” Scott stated. “We were only 9 out of 23 from the line.”
For the game, point guard Katiesha Overton had 10 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, and 4 assists. “‘Tee’ has done a great job for us this year taking over the point guard position,” Scott stated. “She played post and some forward for us last year and has really helped us out with her size and strength.”
Guard Tray Washington had 4 points, 4 steals, and 2 assists. “Tray did a great job,” Scott added. “but foul trouble kept her from playing much in overtime.
In the post, Rickitta Shorter had 14 points and 4 rebounds. “‘Kitta’ has come a long way this year and we are counting on her to really play well the rest of district play.”
“Sophomore forward Marquisha Finley had her best game of the season with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists,” Coach Scott stated. “‘Que’ did an excellent job on defense and had to guard Ennis’ best player. I am very proud of the way she stepped up and gave us her best game.”
“Gabby Broussard had a great second half for us. She ended up with 5 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals, and one block. Gabby has done a great job coming in as a freshman and starting for us. She has gotten better each game,” the coach added.
Waxahachie will try to regain the win column when it hosts Corsicana Tuesday night.
