The Waxahachie Lady Indian cross country team opened its season with a third place finish in the Friday Night Lights race Friday in Lewisville.

The two-mile race started at 8:30 p.m. at Railroad Park. Elizabeth Martinez finished first overall with a time of 12:52. Martinez is the defending district champion and is a three-time regional qualifier.

Tierney Thomison finished second on the team with a time of 14:29. Freshman Caroline Barksdale finished in 14:42 in her first career race.

Jasenda Ferguson led the way for the junior varsity squad, finishing in the top 12 percent of the 204 runners. Freshman Makala Manutai was the second Indian to finish.

The teams return to action Saturday in the Northwood Annual at Northwood University in Cedar Hill.
