A berth in the National Class B Championship Series will at stake beginning Friday at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.

Waxahachie is playing host to the Class B West National Tournament and 22 teams from around the country are expected to participate.

“When you bid on these tournaments you never know what kind of response you’re going to get,” Complex director James Villareal said. “We’re excited and I know the hotels are excited too. If you are trying to get a hotel room in Waxahachie, you’re out of luck.”

Of the 22 teams, 15 are from out of state and Villareal even noted that some of the out-of-state teams have players from other states.

The American Softball Association classifies teams as A, B, C or D teams. This weekend’s tournament will have B teams.

“These are going to be some stout teams coming in,” Villareal said. “In the entire Metroplex there may be five B teams. This is some high-caliber competition.”

The tournament winner will go to Oklahoma City at the end of September to play the winner of the East National in a five-game series. Play is scheduled to get started Friday with Sunday’s championship game set for 1:30 p.m.
